That’s what EDM does — and why it exists in the Makino range alongside the machining centres.
WIRE EDM
A continuously fed wire cuts the profile through the full thickness of the part. Used for through-features: dies, punches, extrusion tooling, complex outlines in hardened material.
DIE-SINK EDM
A shaped electrode burns its own form into the workpiece. Used for blind cavities: mould tools, deep ribs, sharp internal corners that no end mill can produce.
Where it earns its place:
→ Hardened tool steel and carbide, machined after heat treatment — no distortion risk
→ Internal corners with a radius smaller than any available cutter
→ Thin-walled and fragile parts that would deflect under cutting load
→ Surface finishes and tolerances milling can’t reach
Makino is one of the most established names in EDM globally, and the technology sits alongside their machining centres for a reason — most toolrooms need both.
MTT is the official distributor of Makino in Ireland.
